Anne Fishbein is a contemporary photographer (and a friend of my Uncle's) who did a series where she travelled to this funky town in Russia that is still, in many ways, living in the 1950's. She photographed the lives of the people there, and it is eerie how the photographs could have been taken 50 years ago. She made them into a book that is called On the Way Home.
